Summer in Japan means fireworks festivals: crowds in yukata, food stalls, and the sky lighting up over a river. This weekend, the City Lights rooftop gets its own small festival.
From 2 to 4 August, every evening from 19:00 JST, fireworks will burst over the skyline behind our host Neon. They go off in a slow, irregular rhythm, never in time with the music, just like the real thing.
The playlist
The Summer Fireworks playlist is the brightest City Lights has ever been: bouncing bass lines, warm synths and a little nostalgia. Yuzu Sodafloat wrote a new track for the occasion called "Fireworks Tomorrow", about the night before a festival when you can already smell the food stalls.
Small festival traditions
At 20:00 JST each night, we will run a short "fireworks chat": for ten minutes, the chat fills with colours instead of words. Hosts will read out the most creative ones between songs.
For those who are far away
Several of you have written that you live far from home and miss summer festivals. We cannot bring you the smell of grilled corn, but we hope a rooftop, a few fireworks and good music can come close.
Enjoy the summer, drink water, and take breaks in the shade.
