If you have spent an afternoon with us, you have already met Mochi. She is the white cat who naps on the windowsill of the Afternoon Study scene, flicks her tail to the beat and blinks slowly every few seconds.
A lot of you have asked whether Mochi is a real cat. The honest answer: she is drawn, but she is based on a very real cat who lives with one of our team members and spends most of her day in exactly that position.
Why a cat?
The afternoon is the hardest part of the day to focus. The energy of the morning is gone and the evening still feels far away. We wanted something on screen that moves just enough to feel alive, but slowly enough that it never pulls your attention away from your work. A sleeping cat turned out to be perfect.
Small details
Mochi's tail moves in a slow loop that matches the tempo of most Afternoon Study tracks, around 78 beats per minute. She blinks every eight seconds. If you look closely, the curtains behind her move a little too, as if someone left the window open.
Pomodoro with Mochi
Starting next week, Kuro will host a daily Pomodoro session in the chat at 14:00 JST: 25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes of break, four rounds. During breaks we will post cat facts. During focus time, nobody talks. Mochi will be asleep the whole time, as usual.
午後をここで過ごしたことがあれば、もうモチには会っているはずです。アフタヌーン・スタディのシーンで窓辺に寝そべり、リズムに合わせてしっぽをゆらし、数秒ごとにゆっくりまばたきをする白い猫です。
「モチは本物の猫ですか？」とよく聞かれます。正直に答えると、モチは絵です。でもモデルは、スタッフのひとりと暮らすとても実在する猫で、一日のほとんどをまさにあの姿勢で過ごしています。
なぜ猫なのか
午後は一日のうちでいちばん集中しにくい時間です。朝の元気はもうなく、夜はまだ遠い。画面のなかに、生きていると感じられるくらいには動いて、でも作業から気をそらさないくらいゆっくりなものがほしかったのです。眠っている猫は、ぴったりでした。
小さなこだわり
モチのしっぽは、アフタヌーン・スタディの多くの曲のテンポ（毎分およそ78拍）に合わせて、ゆっくりとループしています。まばたきは8秒に一回。よく見ると、うしろのカーテンも少しゆれています。だれかが窓を開けっぱなしにしたみたいに。
モチとポモドーロ
来週から、毎日14:00 JSTにクロがチャットでポモドーロ会を開きます。25分集中、5分休憩を4セット。休憩中は猫の豆知識を投稿します。集中タイムはだれも話しません。モチはいつものように、ずっと寝ています。
